Background:
The school was founded in 1567 after Lawrence Sheriff left money for a school to serve local children. It moved to its present site at Rugby School in the 18th century, and became a grammar school in 1906. It is situated in the town centre and building developments since 1993 include new facilities for technology and maths, a new computer network, sports hall, dining room, drama studio and a suite of new classrooms. A purpose-built sixth-form centre opened in 2001, offering state-of-the-art study facilities, six new classrooms and a new language laboratory. Sport, music and drama are strong and a wide range of extra-curricular activities is offered. In recent years the school has organised visits to Canada, Barcelona, Peru, Austria, France and Germany. Specialist mathematics and computing college status. Over-subscribed, with five applications per place. Investor in People status (2004); DfES achievement award (2001).
