Background:

Established in 1780, this small school is housed in a Victorian building and more modern extension, with a pleasant view over farmland. The extensive grounds comprise two playgrounds, two fields and an adventure playground, and indoor facilities include an information and communications technology (ICT) suite, a library, a large hall and a swimming pool, provided by the parent-teacher association. Friendly staff teaches a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum, and there are specific teachers to support children with special needs or more able children. Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning, with older children helping younger ones to identify their best work. Sports on offer include gymnastics, athletics, games, dance and swimming, and Year 6 pupils participate in outdoor adventure activities on a residential visit to the New Forest. The range of extra-curricular activities includes a before and after-school care facility. All children can learn the recorder, and some learn an additional instrument and play in the school orchestra. Pupils organise charity fundraising events, such as competitions and talent shows. The school acts as a focal point for the community, lending their facilities to local groups and other schools.
