Background:
Situated in centre of Stratford; although a school has existed in Stratford-upon-Avon since the 13th century, the first extant charters date from 1482 and 1553 when Stratford Grammar was renamed and refounded by King Edward VI. Two 15th-century buildings still in use; much of accommodation built in 1960s, when laboratories, classrooms and a heated indoor swimming pool supplemented the 1930s additions; science and technology building added in 1987; new art room and sixth form common room in 1994; new school hall for music, drama and sports in 1997. Music is a strength; all Year 7 pupils receive free instrumental tuition. School uses 20-acre playing fields a mile away; strong in rugby and 'outstanding' in fencing, with many boys competing at international level. Commitment to voluntary social service and community involvement. Specialist humanities college status. Breakfast club, from 8am; homework club, until 5pm. Over-subscribed, with five applications per place. DfES achievement award (2002, 2003). Ethos: 'The school is a caring establishment, where all boys are encouraged to excel. Academic achievement is the top, but not the only, priority'.
